Zone 526 – Kangwon Province – North Korea

Seok shifted in his seat. “American. Listen to me.” He licked his lips, his gaze intent. “We… We could make a deal. Yes?” His eyes darted toward the locked door, then away again. “Speak to your CIA. They see the merit in our plan.” He gave a wheezing chuckle. “What do you say? We could be allies!”

“Not interested.” Fisher moved away, but Seok rocked against his restraints, determined to hold his attention.

“It is the only way you will get out of here alive!”

That itch in Fisher’s back became a pressure like someone jabbing him with the barrel of a gun, and a cold rush of realization rose. For a man who had just lost a thumb and a lot of blood, Seok seemed doggedly intent on continuing their conversation.

“You’re stalling,” growled Fisher.

“I am negotiating,” Seok countered. “I am a businessman, it is my way.” But he couldn’t stop himself from flicking another nervous look in the direction of the black and white monitors.

Grabbing the revolver and the speed-loaders with it, Fisher went to the screens and took a closer look for himself. On one display, the grainy video feed showed a squad of soldiers with assault rifles advancing up the stairwell outside.

Figures with rifles stormed the room, but the narrow entrance forced them to come through it in single file, giving Fisher a momentary advantage.

He grabbed the vodka bottle and hurled it at Seok’s desk. Glass exploded and the 100-proof liquor kissed the smoldering cigar in the ashtray, igniting a wave of blue combustion. Seok’s shirt caught light and he started screaming, shaking violently as the fire took hold.

Pulling the drawstring sack tight on his shoulder, Fisher raised the Norinco revolver and fired, taking out the first soldier into the room. The next round went into the chest of the man behind him, and in the chaos, the other soldiers crowding in caught up to the threat and fired bursts in Fisher’s direction.

He dove out of the line of fire, a hail of bullets ripping through the leather chairs, splintering the wooden cabinets. Webbed cracks grew across the soundproofed windows at his back but the glass did not shatter.

The doorway appeared to be the only way in or out of the room, and if Seok had a secret exit concealed somewhere, Fisher’s opportunity to get it from him was lost. The man tied to the chair howled and thrashed against the
